Makeup for Darker Skin Tones

Makeup companies should consider darker skin tones when making their products.

Making more shades will help women of color not feel left out. Companies have been focusing on lighter skinned women for so long that there is now a demand for darker skin tones. In an informal survey conducted in 2018, the founder of Toronto-based makeup Melanin Girl, Tomi Gbeleti, polled 5,500 women about the beauty industry. Gebleyi discovered that 80 percent of women had difficulty finding a foundation that matched their skin tone. (Payne)

Darker shades do not cost more money to create; they simply require more time. Darker shades are not more expensive to produce because companies are already purchasing large quantities of ingredients for their lighter shade products.

If companies offer more shades they can make more money. The beauty industry itself has often come under attack for not being inclusive of its diverse customer base.

In conclusion, companies and customers would benefit from creating makeup for darker skin tones.
